The nineteenth Ireb symposium was held at the end of 2008. Nearly 70 researchers attended this symposium. No fewer than 41 works subsidised by the Ireb were presented.

Gérard Vachonfrance died suddenly on December 31, 2008. Members of the Scientific Board who knew him well wished to pay tribute to him in this Focus issue devoted to the scientific work he consistently supported.
