INTRODUCTION

IREB is an N.G.O. created in 1971 by responsible producers of alcoholic beverages.
These producers are extremely concerned by the use (or the misuse) which is made with their products and hare together a common concern.
Their aim is to improve the knowledge of the different mechanisms of installation of an excessive consumption and to give some information to the actors of prevention.

ORGANIZATION

The organization of IREB is very light and is overall a link between research and information.
The team of the permanent staff is condensed with three people: a general manager, a librarian and a part time secretary.
The will of the Institute is to keep a light structure and the most part of the activity is dedicated to the alcoholic research.
All the other members of IREB are voluntary members.
Under the responsibility of Daniel HEMARD, chairman an executive committee supervises the structure and assures the link between the member companies and the researchers.

The committee is composed of five members: Daniel HEMARD, the chairman, Professor Jacques WEILL, honorary chairman of the Scientific committee, Professor Georges de SAINT BLANQUAT, chairman of the Scientific committee, Marie CHOQUET, vice-chairman of the Scientific committee and Nicole LEYMARIE, general manager. It manages all the activities and is the brain of this structure.

MEMBER COMPANIES

The member companies participate financially (all the money is private money from the alcoholic beverages companies) and decide in the board of members the policy of IREB. Actually, 9 companies are IREB's members:

  • Bacardi Martini
  • Brasseries Kronenbourg
  • Cusenier
  • Diageo
  • Heineken France
  • Moët Hennessy
  • Pernod
  • Rémy Cointreau
  • Ricard

 SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE

Around Professor Georges de SAINT BLANQUAT, a scientific committee composed of unpaid members determines the big of the scientific alcoholic research in various fields: medical, biological, anthropological, sociological, psychiatric, statistical.
It provides advice and a guarantee of scientific competence

 ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

The researchers who receive grants to work in the field of alcoholic research are often working in laboratories with a team. They choose themselves their subjects and if the scientific committee agrees with, the grants are allocated.
The researcher is independent with his research but must cite IREB when publishing.

For many years now, our research Institute has met biannually with its research group to hold an open conference to discuss the progress of their research and their ideas and difficulties. It's the only conference of this kind in France that gets together so many different fields of research for one subject. The results of this conference are published in “Les Cahiers de l'IREB”. "Les Cahiers de l'IREB n°17" are available on line on this site.

IREB also conducts its own surveys particularly on alcohol consumption. We have published several surveys on alcohol consumption especially among young people (the last one about young people aged 13 to 20) and presented the results to a large public.

In addition to the biennial symposium IREB organises Matinées (breakfast symposia) for professional on selected subjects such as the Ledermann's Law, genetic aspects of alcohol consumption and youth and alcohol. We issue ten press releases a year, a Newsletter and some issues on special subjects Focus .

IREB has implemented a special task force “le groupe IDA” in order to insure proper collection of a reliable information about any kind of figures related to alcohol: production, mortality, morbidity, traffic safety, etc.

IREB created this group with professor GOT well known in France for his involvement in the “Loi Evin”. The members of the group meet regularly and gather together all French actors working on alcohol.

They come from private or public organizations such as DGS, Health Ministry, INSERM, CFES, etc. By its work in this informal group IREB is now a partner of governmental bodies and frequently consulted as an expert in this field.

The last part of the activity is the documentation centre opened to the public, free of charge. It contains the majority of everything published internationally on alcoholism and has an internal database on alcoholism. It is linked to the international databases.
