Europe continues to be the region with the highest alcohol consumption, in the world: average annual consumption is 7.3 litres of pure alcohol (PA) per inhabitant per year. Howewer for more than ten years now, Europe has also shown the sharpest fall in consumption. According to the 2003 edition of World Drink Trends, consumption in the 15 European Union member states declined by 6% between 1990 ans 2001. Within this general downward trend, there are nevertheless a number of disparities across the European continent in terms of overall consumption and types of products drunk.
How can we explain these differences from one area of Europe to another and from one contry to another? What role does wine play in these variations?
This issue of Focus Alcoologie contains a summary of the latest available figures on consumption in Europe.
