The 17th symposium of the Ireb (institute for scientific research on drink) took place under the winter sunshine of the “Ile des Embiez”. This was the opportunity
for the 32 teams sponsored by the Institute to draw up an appraisal of their current works. All the disciplines involved in alcohology were represented during the 8 thematic sessions: from psychology to genetics, sociology, psychiatry, molecular biology, and clinical medicine, without forgetting epidemiology, cancerology or hepatology... Representatives of the alcoholic beverage industry, also members of Ireb-affiliated societies participated to this symposium where about 70 scientists from various horizons
were able to meet and exchange viewpoints.
However, this report on current research is necessarily succinct; we all know that this type of initiative automatically implies a degree of reduction and loss of information. The danger is indeed that, through synthesis, valorisation, adaptation and popularisation, the very essence of such complex notions may be lost. We chose to take this risk, and we invite interested readers to visit our website (www.ireb.com) where they will find the full text of the articles written by the researchers; readers might even contact these researchers directly...
This synthesis was written up by the members of the Ireb scientific committee to show the richness and diversity of the research work undertaken within our organism as well as to emphasise the importance of dialogue between researchers. All took up the “alcohol issue” challenge, a complex and ever-changing topic at the crossroad of sciences.
This is the topic of the ninth Alcohology Focus. This, undoubtedly, is the vocation of Ireb.
This report was written by the members of the Ireb scientific committee following the 17th scientific conference held on December 1st & 2nd, 2004.
