Organised every two years at a member's institution, the last symposium of the Institute for Scientific Research on Alcoholic Beverages was held at the Palais Bénédictine in Fécamp, France. We would like to thank Bacardi-Martini for their welcome during this event. The symposium provided an opportunity for multidisciplinary meetings and exchanges for the 70 or so scientists present, as well as for the numerous professionals in different sectors of the alcoholic beverages industry who attended the symposium.
Around thirty teams of researchers subsidised by the Institute were gathered during these two days to review their work. Organised by members of the IREB Scientific Committee, the event was articulated around six thematic sessions. Once again, these highlighted the complementary nature of the different disciplines involved in alcohology research (psychology, sociology, genetics, biology, etc.).
The research presented in this issue of Focus is of course in a summarised form, and these summaries are designed for a general readership. As Paul Valéry wrote: “All that is simple is false and all that is complex is useless”. For this reason, we advise readers who are seeking for more detail to refer to the original articles published in the Cahiers de l’Ireb section of the IREB website (www.ireb.com).
We would also like to thank the Scientific Committee members who contributed to this update on ongoing research and overcame the problem of summarising and rendering the information understandable to the general public, so that anyone can perceive the breadth of the research subsidised by the Ireb.

Synthesis compiled by members of the Scientific Committee, December 6th, 2006, under the supervision of Professor Georges de Saint Blanquat, following the 18th IREB Symposium (December 6th and 7th, 2006).
